Being a criminology major meant spending a lot of time on campus. Actually, that was probably the way things were for most seniors. There were quite a lot of projects that needed to be done, and he couldn't graduate without them. Besides, some of the most interesting people hung out at the library. It probably wasn't the sort of hangout most college students frequented.
With news of this killer about, people didn't venture out alone all that much. He watched pairs of friends and couples come into the library to use the books, though most of the couples came to use the stacks. He'd set up his laptop on the second floor in a private workstation where he had a perfect view of the people that were such a lovely distraction from his homework. He was writing a paper that would be due shortly, but he knew he'd finish it even if he wasn't paying complete attention. He'd always been smart enough to pass his classes without a great deal of effort. Something a lot of his classmates resented him for.
His most recent distraction was a brunette a couple of aisles away. He wasn't yet sure what she was looking for, but she was alone, and he could tell that she wasn't used to it. She didn't seem particularly comfortable with the idea of being alone while there was a killer on the loose, and he really couldn't blame her. The whole serial killer thing was pretty creepy.
She'd been on the aisle for seven and a quarter minutes when he decided he'd speak to her. She'd been distracting him from his work, and he was determined to at least figure out if she was a worthy distraction. He stood and made his way to the aisle, coming around the corner in time to catch her before she exited the end of the aisle. "Not so safe, really. Running around alone... Haven't you heard there's a killer on the loose?" He couldn't fight his smirk. The killer was creepy, but he was amusing, as well.

Hiring a babysitter for the evening had been the least of her worries after the reports of a killer being on the lose in Cordova. She had asked one of her elderly neighbors to watch over Ella that night, so that she could go to campus to do her research for her paper that was due in a few weeks. She needed to get a head start now while she could, since she didn't know what school and work would look like next week. She could hardly tell from one day to another how busy her life would be.
Having a baby, working a full time job and studying to finish out her senior year of school was absolutely the most stressful she thought her life could get. Then the news of the killer came out and now she stressed about that too - she didn't want to go anywhere alone at night, but being that this was a campus building, she was hoping that safety would not be an issue. But next semester was going to get worse when she had to start her student teaching hours.
She was walking the aisles now at the school's library... the place was a little too quiet and erie, but she liked that about it. No one ever comes here to study really, except her and some other nerds. She was looking for books that she needed to do her education based research project, she was looking for a book about special education classroom management. She was rounding the end of an aisle to head down the next when she bumped into someone. Without looking she immediately said "Sorry" and started to move around them, when she realized he was talking to her...
"Yeah, I know... but it's hard to study at home. It's quieter here." She gave him a sweet smile, hoping this conversation didn't last long. She had work to do and didn't date guys at all. She hadn't been on a date since before Ella was born.
