When her father showed up moments later James didn't even get a chance to explain, a chance to talk, a chance to ask if he could come in with him. James did stand up however, but DJ's father pulled the door shut quickly behind him and James started pacing the ground outside. He heard him say something about ripping out stitches, and then he heard Danielle yelling for him, him, James. He couldn't help but smile, there was her fire. Not to mention, she sounded like she would be fine.
James just opened the door. She was fine now, there was no reason that he couldn't see her. He would try to tread carefully though because her father still didn't like him. And really James hadn't seen him since the day when he'd met DJ. He hesitated only for a moment before going to her side, the opposite side, away from her father of course. "Hey Danielle," He said softly, soothingly, taking her hand softly. "You should rest." James urged, a little relieved smile on his lips.
His strategy was to ignore Mr Trighton until he said something.

[size-1]DJ was used to not getting what she wanted where her family was involved, so she was actually a little surprised that her dad hadn't locked her in the room or locked everyone else out of it. She abruptly stopped yelling when she saw James walk into the room. A soft smile spread across her lips, and her eyes brightened a little. Her father bristled at the use of her full name, and DJ heaved a sigh. "Shut up, Dad. If you didn't want it to be used, you shouldn't have let mum give me the name."
Her father didn't so much as look at her in response. Instead, he turned his attention toward her boyfriend. "Given the circumstances, I think it's best if you leave, young man." Her father's voice was cold and serious, and DJ felt anger bubbling up in her stomach. In the back of her mind, she figured stress wasn't good for her at this point. Not given the amount of bleeding she'd apparently been doing, anyway. She couldn't quite convince herself to keep her mouth shut, though.
"Don't be a prick! He hasn't done anything. You should be thanking him. I could be dead in a parking lot right now!" It wasn't something she wanted to consider, and the mere thought of the possibility made DJ's eyes sting with tears. The truth was, she and James both could have been killed. Really, they were just lucky. They were the exception to the rule with this killer.
"I'll have the nurse order your medication," he told DJ, ignoring the point she'd made. "And you. I never want to see you around my daughter again." His gray-green eyes leveled the younger man standing across from him. If it hadn't been for this boy, he figured, his daughter wouldn't have been alone in a parking lot at night. She wouldn't have been anywhere near the killer. Perhaps it was impractical, but it was the assumption he'd chosen to make. [/size][/blockquote]

James sighed, couldn't he do anything right? "Sir, she left me at my dorm and walked to her car. She sent me a text because she thought she was being followed. So I ran out of my dorm to find her, he was already at her when I got there..." James, closed his eyes for a moment, her screams echoing in his ears. "I just went at him, and after he'd gotten me to let go, he went back for, I grabbed a tire iron from my tick and made a lucky whack. Frankly sir, you should be happy she's alive. It's not my fault he was out there, I'm just glad DJ can text that fast."James couldn't bring himself to be angry at her dad really, he was too worried about Danni for that. But he really did deserve some credit. DJ couldn't have gotten away a lone. He didn't doubt her, just physical and against a killer, she had no chance. Both of them could have died right there anyway...
"I'll leave this hospital room, but I won't stop seeing your daughter." James said, looking back at Danielle and squeezing her hand softly. He wanted to kiss her lips, her hand, anything to comfort her, but he didn't want to upset her dad more. So with one last look he tried to remove his hand and walk out the door.
ooc- you can decide if DJ or her dad make him stay or not.

Chief Trighton seemed to be listening which was sort of a good sign. Sure, he hadn't moved to show any sign of gratitude for the hand James had played in keeping DJ alive, but he didn't seem to want to kill the boy either. DJ chewed her lower lip nervously. "Dad, you're being really unfair... Can't you just give him a chance? You obviously know he's not the killer by now. If he was, I'd be dead, right?" Her eyes pleaded with her father's and she was sure she'd have been on her knees begging if she was able to get out of the bed. As it was, she was doing the best she could. Her fingers searched for James', but her eyes were on her father.
The look on DJ's face must have been enough to second James' words, and her father's gaze softened. "Fine. You can stay. But you better keep her safe. And we're going to have a talk about that tattoo." Obviously he remembered enough to know that James was the same guy he'd found shirtless in his daughter's living room. "Your background check came back clean, anyway."
DJ glared at her father. He'd run a background check on the boy who had taken her to prom, as well, and that boy had been gay. DJ had been his excuse to go to the prom so that he could dance with his boyfriend. "It wouldn't kill you to trust a person once in a while," she told her father. After a moment, she turned her eyes toward James. "And for the record, I love you. And your tattoo."

James smiled when her dad's face softened. Yes! Her dad didn't have to love him, as long as he didn't hate him. "I promise Sir." He said, keeping DJ safe would be his intention at all times, as much as he could. James refused to be stuffy and over protective like her father, but he would still worry and care and look out for her. The killer had never had anyone escape and he would probably be back for them, and that worried him. "You did a background check on me?" he said, laughing, not offended. the guy must be insane.
"Of course, I do a background check on anymore who tries to get close to my daughter."He said, as if it were what every parent did.
James turned to Danni when she said that she loved him and his tattoo, he couldn't help himself, and he leaned over and kissed her softly, afraid to hurt her anymore than she was already hurt, and he pulled away as he heard her father clear his throat loudly.
"Well," James said. "Since you did a background check, I suppose you know that I'm half Native American, my tattoo is the symbol of my mother's tribe. I got it before we moved away from the reservation, I never want to lose sight of who I am and where I come from." He explained, hoping that he understood that reasoning.

She wanted to crawl in a hole. Her father was impossibly awkward and extremely overprotective. It was one thing to actually run a background check on someone. It was completely different to tell that person about it afterward. She blushed at the idea, but James seemed completely alright with it, and his laughter calmed her quite a bit. By the time her dad had admitted to running a background check on everyone who tried to get close to her, DJ was smiling, as well.
When James' lips met hers, DJ kissed him back fiercely. She wanted him to know that she'd meant what she said, and in the moment, she practically forgot her father's existence. Chief Trighton wasn't one to be ignored, though, and he cleared his throat, effectively making the situation awkward. Danni blushed and very reluctantly pulled away. Her eyes focused on the bedsheets which, thankfully, covered the hideous hospital gown she was wearing, and she made a mental note to ask her father to bring her some clothes.
The story behind James' tattoo was one that DJ already knew, so she let her eyes fall shut again, giving her father and her boyfriend a moment to themselves. She couldn't very well leave the room, so this was the best she could offer. Her father didn't say anything for a moment, but he seemed to be considering the reasons James had offered. At last, he broke the silence. "I suppose that's a respectable reason," she heard her father mumble. DJ smiled a little. It wasn't approval exactly, but it wasn't disdain either.
Opening her eyes slowly, she looked at her father. "I suppose I should have told you that he's my boyfriend," DJ whispered. She was blushing again, but she knew by now that James wouldn't mind, though she was surprised her body had enough spare blood to waste any on turning her cheeks pink.

James smiled a little. That wasn't really welcoming, but at least he was earning points with her father. Having good reasons for a tattoo and saving her from a killer. Obviously James' well mannered nature was not helping as much as those things were. He was about to thank Mr Trighton or something when DJ told her father that James was her boyfriend. Ah, so the man didn't know yet. James' smile faltered only slightly because he wasn't sure how the man would react.
Now, he'd seen them exchange their 'i love you's and kiss. But somehow that didn't seem the same as saying flat out, dad i've been dating hi and didn't tell you. Which was basically what she just said.
Her dad closed his eyes for a moment, sighing. And James waited tensely for him to say something. They'd been dating for a while now, a couple months, and this might upset him to be let into the loop so late.
"For how long?" asked Mr Trighton after a long time.
James was quiet, but if they were getting into everything now, they should probably be honest, he wouldn't attack them in a hospital... "Almost three months." James said carefully.

She could probably have found a better time to let her father in on the whole dating a boy of another race thing, but DJ was tired of keeping the secret. She was tired of being afraid of what her dad might think. Besides, the incident had forced her to realize that life could be over all too suddenly, and she didn’t want to go out without letting everyone know the truth. And she was entirely too in love with James to keep their relationship a secret.
Bracing herself for an adverse reaction, Danni squeezed her eyes shut and listened when James told her father how long they’d been dating. Her father’s voice was slow and impossibly calm when he responded with nothing more than, ”I see.” DJ cracked one eye open and peered at him. He didn’t look as angry as she would have expected. ”It would appear that you and I are going to have to have a talk,” he informed the younger man. Danni winced at the idea. It would probably be the “my daughter will always be a virgin” talk. That was impractical, of course. She wouldn’t be a virgin forever. If she was, she would never have children, and that simply wasn’t an option as far as she was concerned.
”Dad… I… um, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you before.” She had been trying to find the right way to tell him and the right time to do so, but he’d seemed so upset when he’d initially met James, and she was sure he wasn’t going to get any happier about it. He seemed to have a very strong belief in the idea that if the Lord wanted races to intermarry, we would have all been born the same color. Danni, of course, preferred to see more than the color of a person’s skin. Her father offered her a cool gaze that told her he was, in fact, hurt that he’d been excluded, but it looked like he was willing to at least try and accept DJ’s new love interest.
”I’ve got to go to the station,” he muttered, kissing DJ on the forehead. ”Take care of my daughter,” he ordered James. Danielle stifled a giggle as she watched her father walk out the door. Once he was gone, she let the silence settle for a moment. She really wasn’t sure what she was supposed to say. [/blockquote]

James was relieved when her dad didn't get upset with them, though he did sort of look hurt to James. "Of course sir," he said after Trighton said they would have to have a talk. James already knew what it would be about. If you hurt my daughter, I'll arrest you, she's my baby and she better not be having sex with you etc. james could handle it. Trouble was, he didn't really think he could keep his hands off DJ, not completely, and her dad had to know that. Besides, they weren't kids anymore. They really weren't. Even if he was only 19... but still.
James couldn't believe he was leaving, maybe to find out if they caught the killer, which James somehow doubted. But he nodded again, he would always take care of Danni.
Once the door shut he got closer to her girl, "Well, that went pretty well, with your dad I mean... How are you feeling?" He asked, his eyes dropping to her stomach. The thought of that man stabbing her killed him, it made him sick, the idea of someone hurting her. Honestly, she seemed easy to hurt and he was worried about her.

James was impossibly polite, which had to be what most fathers wanted, and it made DJ smile. There was no legitimate reason she could see for anyone not to like him or for any parent not to want him to be with their daughter. She rolled her eyes at her father's orders for James to take care of her. If it hadn't been for the fact that she was currently laid up in a hospital bed, she might have argued that she could take care of herself. With a killer on the loose, though, that was questionable. Then again, with this killer running around, most people couldn't really take care of themselves.
Once her father was out of the room, DJ's eyes returned to James, and she was sure they reflected every once of desire she had. She wanted to hold him, to kiss him, to remember that he was real and that he really was there for her. He'd said he loved her, and it had to be true. After all, he'd put himself in a potentially deadly situation just for the possibility that he could save her. A smile crept onto her lips at the comment about her dad. He was right. Things had gone pretty well. "He's not all bad," she assured him, "Just a little overprotective is all." She shrugged and grinned at James. His next question, though, made her huff a little. She realized she'd just been attacked and she could, quite possibly, have been killed, but the last thing she really wanted to talk about right now was how she was feeling. It made her feel vulnerable and entirely too human. (ooc - wow, that's really a bella state of mind)
"I'd feel better if you'd kiss me," she mumbled, her eyes flickering toward James' lips. So what if they didn't have complete privacy? She did have her own room, an the nurses wouldn't say anything as long as she wasn't putting herself in danger again.

"I don't blame him for being protective, it just doesn't make it easy for me." he laughed lightly. Frankly, DJ said it herself, she was better with her characters than she was with people, and that made her a target, and easy one, she seemed emotionally breakable to him and he just wanted to look out for her, because he really did love her. He loved how awkward she could be and he loved how easy things had become for them, between them. She was loosening up and letting her little firey stubborn side show, and he liked that.
At her comment he chuckled and took the extra step closer to her and cupped her face gently, pressing his lips to hers. And this time he didn't bother trying to hold back. He kissed her passionately, without being rough, his tongue tentatively asking for a little room. He loved Danielle, and he wanted her to know how happy he was that she was alive.

She really was surprised that her dad didn't like James more than he seemed to. They were a lot alike in the important ways. They certainly both wanted to protect her, and she supposed she could live with that. It was better to have someone want to protect you than to have someone want to hurt you.
James' kiss chased all thought from DJ's head, and she kissed him back ferociously, her arms moving to loop around his neck. Within moments, she was pulling herself toward him, and it was pulling on her stitches. She winced, let out a tiny whimper, and moved her lips back toward his, hoping his desire to protect her wouldn't extend quite far enough to ruin this moment.

James kept kissing her, until he heard her whimper, this leaning forward to meet him, wasn't a good idea. So he gently pushed her back to she was reclining in the bed, lowering the bed a little to do so. This way she wouldn't be bending over at the waist to kiss him. James kept his lips on hers, letting his tongue slip softly into her mouth.
This position was a little bit more uncomfortable for him, being bent over this way. However, it was more important that she didn't rip out her stitches. They would have to be careful of them for a while, realistically speaking. But that didn't mean he'd give up on loving her. It just meant nothing more than heated kisses for now.

She wanted to argue. Really, she did. It was sort of endearing that James was so worried about keeping her safe and keeping her from hurting, but sometimes DJ didn't want to be taken care of. She had never really been a reckless person, but once in a while, she wanted to be allowed to do something stupid, careless, or dangerous. It just so happened that she was too eager to let James' tongue explore her mouth to actually stop and argue with him.
A moment later, though, she'd gotten frustrated again. This couldn't possibly be comfortable for him and, though she knew it would hurt and it wasn't entirely practical, she pushed against him, trying to sit up again.

James broke off the kiss slightly, talking against her lips. "Danni...I can kiss you lying down, you just got stitches, it really not worth ripping them out." he said , but he knew she could get hot headed, so he let her sit up a little, adjusting the seat, but it was not as vertical as he figured she probably wanted. But really, he didn't want her stitches to rip out, not only would her dad hate him but the emergency people would be sick of them. "You need to heal first." He just saved her, he didn't need her to hurt herself more.
It was hard though, James might be polite and not pushy, but he did have physical needs and wants. It was very hard to tell her that they couldn't really get too heated, whatever angle she was at. Because he wanted to give her more, get more, but he didn't need her to hurt herself like that to do it. They could wait. Besides, they were in a hospital, someone would be back to check on her.
