Even if she was usually good at controlling her emotions, DJ couldn't help but be annoyed at James' persistence with the whole sitting up or lying down issue. "James, I'm not going to break. I'll be fine," she insisted, her eyes turning hard and dark. She didn't want to be babied, and she didn't want to be reminded of the fact that she was, indeed, fragile. His insistence that she needed to heal only served to frustrate her, though she knew her dad would be pleased if he knew that James was even going against Danielle's own wishes to keep her safe.
After a moment, she pulled away from him, turning her face so that she was staring at the wall. "If you're just going to baby me, you might as well go." It wasn't that she wanted him to leave, really. Danni didn't want to be alone, and, specifically, she didn't want to be without James. She just didn't want to be reminded of her own humanity. She wanted to pretend she was invincible for once. She'd never been that way as a teenager, and was determined to ignore the dangers of real life while she could. Besides, the killer had failed, and he didn't seem like the type to give up. If he was coming back, she didn't want to miss a single experience before he did.

James frowned a little and pulled back as she did. He understood what she meant, but it was more important to have her in one piece so they could really love without worrying about her than to get it now and make it worse, or kill her or something. "I'm sorry for babying you." He said. He was babying her, he did it a lot, he viewed her as fairly fragile. She was new to dating, new to being herself, and he did baby her in some ways because of it. That didn't mean he wanted her to become a hard ass, and that didn't mean he meant to baby her. It was just what happened.
James was altogether too mature about this. maybe he should have just given in and done everything she want, given in to his own desires. But he was tired, his arm hurt, and his .... equipment, hurt as well. He wasn't really physically prepared to do much right now, and he assumed neither was she. James didn't want to associate the killer with any major romantic step, and he'd already gotten the first 'i love you's.

Most guys would have left at that point. It just made sense, really. When a girl is in a bad mood, it's just about impossible to do the right thing, and leaving is easier than sticking around (even though leaving is not the right thing either). Obviously, though, James was not most guys. DJ's eyes slid over so that she could see him without moving her head. She pretended to think for a moment, like she was deciding if she wanted to be mad at him. In the end, though, she realized that it was extremely difficult to be angry with James. So, slowly, she turned her head back so that she was looking up at him. "I'm sorry for being an insufferable tart," she offered. Funny how pain medication, trauma, and frustration only improved her vocabulary.
Moving her legs over slightly, DJ patted the small bare spot she'd made on the bed. "I'm all over the shop tonight... Have a sit with me. I'll be alright soon." Actually, she was getting sleepy. Her father or sister would have picked up on that right away given the slip she'd made back to British slang. Usually, she was pretty good at keeping up with where she was and who she was talking to. James probably thought she was crazy.

James smiled and sat down where she indicated. "I kind of like it when you're a tart," he admitted. Her being stubborn was unbelievably irresistible. James liked to see her firey side. He might have been a good guy, but he was playful, rough and tumble. Sometimes DJ seemed very lofty, educated, writerly. And he liked when she crashed back to earth. Not to mention she got even cuter when she was a little annoyed.
James knew those were not normal American expressions she was using, but he guessed the meanings and just chuckled softly. Her eyelids looked a little heavy and he smiled softly. But he didn't suggest that maybe she should sleep, but he planned to stay with her until she did sleep. Then he would go back to school to sleep this off, after he called his parents of course. He wished he could just stay here though. Safer.

Her stupid eyelids just kept getting heavier, and DJ wondered just what the doctors had given her for pain. "I'm a bit knackered... I hope you won't mind if I..." Her words were cut off by a huge yawn, and DJ giggled a little. "I think they've drugged me," she admitted. "You won't leave, though, will you?" DJ asked, her voice growing softer as her eyelids grew heavier. She didn't have a chance to hear any response James might have made, though, because she was quickly falling asleep.
